Prepared by the Standards Australia Committee IT-036, the Australian Standard 5488-2013, Classification of Subsurface Utility Information (SUI), provides a guide for standardising the way spatial, environmental and physical properties of a buried utility are recorded in Australia.

The committee included subsurface infrastructure organisations such as Dial Before You Dig (DBYD), National Utility Locating Contractors Association (NULCA) and Roads and Maritime Services (RMS). The standard is expected to improve public safety, minimise outages and reduce property damage through improving the collection and distribution of data.
